1. NEW FEATURES

There are lots of new features on the site -
downloadable glossary, lyrics linked in
sequence, tell a friend, and more!

a) Downloadable glossary.

Now you can download the entire karnATik
glossary as a pdf file and view and print it!
(You can thank a wise visitor for requesting it!)

Need to look up that weird term your teacher
used? Just check.

Please don't post the glossary on your site but
feel free to download it and keep it for your
personal use. The online version will remain
as well! I will update both together.

move to the next or the previous song. Skip to the very
first song ever added and move on to the newer
ones. There are 830 unique songs to go through!

3. TRIVIA ETC.

I'm including a few more very interesting (at
least to me!) questions this time.
Tell me if there's something in particular
you'd like to see or a question
you want answered. Occasionally this space
may also have articles or other fun stuff. Let me
know if you have a contribution.

(Answers at the end)

1) Who wrote the Tamil epic Silappadikaaram?

2) What is Manipravalam?

3) When did Hindustani and Carnatic music split?

4) What is the oldest sabha in South India?

1.Ilango Adigal, brother of the king who ruled
the west coast of India, wrote this epic about
200-300 AD. Many musical terms and knowledge
derive from this poem.
2.A language that combines MalayaaLam with
Sanskrit, used in numerous compositions by
Swati TirunaL and other composers.
3.Originally there was a single style of
classical music in India. These split into
Hindustani and Carnatic at about the 12th or
13th centuries AD.
4.Sangeetha Vidwat Sabha (now Sri Parthasarathy
Swami Sabha) originally begun in 1896. Greats
such as Muthiah Bhaagavatar, Pooci Srinivaasa
Iyengar, and Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar have
performed there.
