Carnatic Matrimony 4: Drumming Up a Second Act<

- by Susmita Ramani

Twenty-eight and newly single, Jayashri decided to do something for herself. She’d always wanted to learn bharatanatyam, but had been discouraged first by her parents, who couldn’t afford lessons, then by her ex-husband, who felt it was a waste of time.

Now her life was her own again. She vowed to rid herself of thoughts of romance, and applied herself to dance as she’d never applied herself to anything. Five years later, she was ready for her arangetram, a three-hour solo culminating performance.

Live musicians came from India, including a dashing tabla player named Prakash.

They returned to India together.
