The first mention of the ragam Saveri was found in the bUk 'Swaramelakalanidhi' by
Ramamathyar in 1550 B.C. It
was not recognised as a janyam of Mayamalavagowla, but as that of Salanga nata. Salanga
nata is an old ragam in
which Annamacharya has composed several kritis. Tulaja, in his 'SangItha Saramrutham',
and Venkatamakhi , both mention that Salanga nata (or Saranga Nata) and Saveri are the
janyas of Mayamalavagowla. Even though Saveri is a janyam of Mayamalavagowla, there is
a marked difference in the sound effects produced by these two ragams.
